Starin' out my window
Watch the sun rise
While I lay out in the morning, and I think on my disguise
It's always with me; I keep it close in tow
Will it serve me in the places where I know I'm bound to go
From the common to the lonely walks of life
Each one blows by me, to the afternoon's delight
She is my lady, and I her long-lost man
By the time the sun gets low then I'll be gone from her again
Goodbye, true love
I'll settle for what I've got coming
It's all made up
And all so hollow with an eager kind of cunning
Now I've fallen victim to the habits preached before me
And I've shrugged them off before, both cleverly and poorly
I've gotten up before, in youthfulness and spite
Right now I'm out here wondrin' where I find myself tonight
For it seems that all around me are machines of every size
And the people who walk by me simply sigh and raise their eyes
Once in a while it gets lonely being me
Tearing out my soul under a tall and shady tree
