Who's this girl named Kelly?
An interruption whispered, "Help is what I need."
A soft, fair-skinned, freckled child
Her eyes asked me to stay a while
She told me a story, too crazy to believe
It was then I knew I couldn't leave
I felt that heat, inside that air-sealed space
The darkness overtook her beautiful face
She wasn't going to see the light of day
Conditioned to sit tight, with choice taken away
And still, her smile was as sweet as can be
But what in the world, who is this Kelly?
Kelly is her, it's you, and it's me
Who needs a warm hand and hug
Because closed in a box of denied love
Was what she got - too young to not accept it
I told her, "Don't worry, I'll hold you for a bit."
And for all the kids we still are inside
Their eyes say, "Don't take too long, just try."
Hmmmmmm Hmmm
Hmmm hmmm
A gust of cool wind through the window
She left , where I don't know
At least I got to tell her, "Breathe, it's okay, I'm here."
As I wiped away long forgotten tears
Of the time that I too had felt caged
Denying myself all but rage
Take the straitjacket away
Far from the shackles where we stay
Telling ourselves the same story
That we'll be left and ridiculed as unworthy
Yet beneath, a yearning to be happy
Could she be in all of us, this Kelly?
Kelly is her, it's you, and it's me
Who needs a warm hand and hug
Because closed in a box of denied love
Was what she got - too young to not accept it
I told her, "Don't worry, I'll hold you for a bit."
And for all the kids we still are inside
Their eyes say, "Don't take too long, just try."
Hmmmmmm Hmmm
Hmmm hmmm
Like the vase with cracks filled with gold
Such unwelcomed imperfections we were told
Not broken, rather nothing short of a mastery
With scars that beautify what we don't always see
Hmmm Hmmm Hmmm
Hmmmm
Hmmm Hmmm Hmmm
