Flatts Fields - The Fields: A Prologue Lyrics

Flatts Fields - The Fields: A Prologue Lyrics

It was a Sunday afternoon
Goin' on year 17 since it happened
There was this blinding white light, weird and disorienting
Like you were under some giant hot magnifying glass
When this blindness, this overpowering light lifted most people in the world
They just vanished. Gone
There was no order to it
And every denomination from Catholics to Hindus went missing without a trace
Doctors, teachers, lawyers, inmates, police, indiscriminately disappeared
Families vanished or were split seemingly at random
Everyone and everything left, became chaos
They say roughly 80 percent of the world's population had suddenly
And inexplicably gone missing with no notion as to where they went

There was no booming, heavenly voice telling the rest of us all the things we did wrong
Only silence and the foreboding feeling we'd been left behind
World leaders, mothers, fathers, daughters, sons... hell, random laundry attendants
Heating and cooling specialists, all just gone, leaving everything behind

Of course that wasn't it. You see it wasn't just limited to people
Most animals, wildlife and domesticated vanished too
Leaving behind mostly the sickly or the barren
Plants and trees disappeared too
Most of them anyways
Forests became balding sparse landscapes
As if some behemoth had come and plucked up the strongest specimen
Leaving vast stretches of land bare, haggard and disheveled
A rough red clay replaced healthy roots and strangled soil into sparse, dry pockets
It would soon be discovered that other than in rare cases
The Earth would no longer take on seeds
No more crops, no more industry
It was as if someone really important had simply said "enough"
Everything as it was known, was known no more
And world as we knew it was undone

Sure, at first, some of the worlds few remaining leaders
Tried to pick up the pieces and make sense of it all, you know, organize, unify, survive
But a funny thing happened
Seems like most of us left, for whatever reason
Ain't really the cream of the crop if you know what I mean
Whatever it is in us that makes us what we are, you know "human"
Well it's slowly drying up too
We care a little less everyday
We get a little less "human" every day
I don't know how much longer I'll make it out here
How long till i become like them?
They say the graces abandoned us... abandoned us all
