The Cruel Earth - A Great Flood's A Comin' Lyrics

The Cruel Earth - A Great Flood's A Comin' Lyrics
Official

Driving through the dust of the Texas pan
Red clouds swirling like the plains of hell
Picked up a stranger along the way
Asked him his name, he had nothing to say
Twenty miles on the clouds were still thick
Smearing up the windshield, red as brick
Said to the stranger, "I can't see the road"
Stranger said nothin', pulled his hat down low
Twenty miles more and I felt sweat on my neck
Said, "Grab a couple cold ones from the cooler in the back"
Stranger sat there like he hadn't heard
Then he turned and got our drinks without saying a word
He popped the cap with his thumb and tipped the bottle up
Emptied that sucker in one big gulp
Let out a belch that echoed in my truck
Like the hounds of hell, it stunk like a skunk
The stranger cleared his throat like he's about to speak
Sounded like the growl of a great caged beast
I glanced his way but saw no eyes in his head
His smile opened wide and this is what he said
God's never made a creature
More wicked than man
His sin casts a shadow
That darkens the land
But a great flood's a-comin'
To wash us all away
Leave earth to the critters
Put man in his grave
I gripped the wheel tighter and shivered in my boots
The hitchhiking stranger turned out to be a kook
I point out the window, said, "No rain, no sin"
"Just a whole lotta sand, just a whole lotta wind"
The stranger grabbed another cold one, said,
"No, the devil's on his way
And this red storm means he's comin'
Soon he'll me making hay"
"The ghost of the Cheyenne, Apache, and Sioux
The Navaho nation and the Commacheros too
They've cursed us all for the evil we done
Curses us with drugs, liquor, and guns
Damned us forever to the fires of hell
Just roll down your window, son, you can hear the bells"
I decided then the stranger had to go
So I pointed my rig north toward New Mexico
Drove halfway to Sante Fe
Said. "Well, my friend, it's time we parted ways"
He said, "I'll carry on with you if you don't mind"
I said, "I gotta deliver alone and I'm behind on time"
If he knew I was lyin', he didn't raise a fuss
He slowly got out of my truck
He tipped his hat, showed me the holes in his head
Smiled wide as a valley and this is what he said
God's never made a creature
More wicked than man
His sin casts a shadow
That darkens the land
But a great flood's a-comin'
To wash us all away
Leave earth to the critters
Put man in his grave
I hauled ass out of the parking lot
Drove through the night, never once stopped
Dust died down, but it started to rain
Wondered if the great flood was underway
My rig still smelled like the weirdo stranger
Old sweat, burps, fear, and danger
So I rolled the windows down to air the mother out
Turned the radio up and let out a shout
The fresh air helped, so did the sun
But I was running from something I couldn't outrun
Turned off the radio, there was a voice on the wind
Sounded like gravel, talkin' 'bout sin, sayin'
God's never made a creature
More wicked than man
His sin casts a shadow
That darkens the land
But a great flood's a-comin'
To wash us all away
Leave earth to the critters
Put man in his grave
God's never made a creature
More wicked than man
His sin casts a shadow
That darkens the land
But a great flood's a-comin'
To wash us all away
Leave earth to the critters
Put man in his grave
