Sara Bareilles - Amidst the Chaos Album Lyrics

Sara Bareilles - Amidst the Chaos Lyrics

Fire

Door clicks while his wheels start spinning on the pavement
And I go fill the space up where he has been staying
Won't lose much sleep, he never went that deep
Love you, oh, you sweet thing, no, I never said that
Let me hold your ego while you get your bag packed
Don't take this the wrong way
But when the spade shows up, I call it by its first name

We were, we were never gonna catch fire
We'd've burned up in the flames
Long before they ever rose up higher
Someday I, I won't have to feel the cold
But I do now, so I'll know
What it feels like when I feel fire, fire

Mmm, fire
Fire

Talk, touch, kiss, bend, this one's just like all the others
And I know all too well that I won't beat the waters
I held my breath to swim
The shallow shores aren't safe enough to dive in

We were, we were never gonna catch fire
We'd've burned up in the flames
Long before they ever rose up higher
Someday I, I won't have to feel the cold
But I do now, so I'll know
What it feels like when I feel fire, fire

That comes-and-stays fire
On-blood-and-veins fire
I've only ever wanted, fire
In my chest, in my mouth, on my tongue, in my mind
In my soul, so my lungs can breathe in fire

We'd've burned up in the flames
Long before they ever rose up higher
Someday I, I won't have to feel the cold
But I do now, so I'll know
What it feels like when I feel fire, fire

No Such Thing

I feel you, it's like you're in the next room
At any given moment, you could reappear
Thin air, you're out there in it somewhere
If I could only get there, I could breathe again

Tell me how to start
What comes after you?
I am in the dark
Love what now?

No such thing as over you
I don't want it anyway
I wouldn't even try to
If I don't let go, then there is
No such thing as over this
I've tried to get over you, over you, over you
But I think there's no such thing

Broken, you're Rome, I am the ruins
The stone I can't find you in is all that still remains

Little white lights
They perforate every night sky
I say it to them every time
"Come back in"

No such thing as over you
I don't want it anyway
I wouldn't even try to
If I don't let go, then there is
No such thing as over this
I've tried to get over you, over you, over you

You're on my mind, all the time
But I can't fix it by fixating on a rewind
(Tried to get over you, over you, over you)
When a good thing changes
When the change is staying
Only thing to find is
What to hold on 'til there's something else to hold on to
(Over you, over you, over you)
Hold on, 'til there's something else to hold on to

No such thing
I don't want it anyway
I wouldn't even try to
If I don't let go, then there is
No such thing as over this
I've tried to get over you, over you, over you
But I think there's no such thing

Armor

Let it begin, let Adam in
Step one: original sin
Underneath the leaves, Adam found Eve
Both of them found something sweet under the apple tree
Then it was over, roads divide
Step two: learning how to lie
Let me ask a question to present day
How the hell did Eve end up with all the damn blame?
All the damn blame

To all the dirty looks, the kitty cat calls
To the ones who try and throw us up against the back walls
Let me tell you something you'll understand
Only the little boys tell you they're a big man
To all my sisters and all our friends
We have to thank them, please
Strength means blessed with an enemy

All my, my, my, my armor comes from you
You make me try, try, try, try harder
Oh, that's all I ever do, ever do
Oh, no no, my, my, my, my armor comes from you
You make me stronger, stronger
Now, hand me my armor
(Hand me my armor, hand me my armor)

Step three: I see
The unforgettable, incredible ones who came before me
Brought poetry, brought science
Sowed quiet seeds of self-reliance
Bloomed in me, so here I am
You think I am high and mighty, mister?
Wait 'til you meet my little sister

All my, my, my, my armor comes from you
You make me try, try, try, try harder
Oh, that's all I ever do, ever do
Oh, no no, my, my, my, my armor comes from you
You make me stronger, stronger
Now, hand me my armor

What you didn't do to bury me
But you didn't know I was a goddamn seed
You don't scare me, I am of the earth
So tired of your empire
Blind men only set the world on fire
Sad you can't see it
You brought the flame, here comes the phoenix
You make me try harder
Oh, it's all I ever do, ever do
Oh, no no, my, my, my, my armor comes from you
You make me stronger, stronger
Hand me my armor

All my, my, my, my armor comes from you
You make me try, try, try, try harder
Oh, that's all I ever do, ever do
Oh, no no, my, my, my, my armor comes from you
You make me stronger, stronger
Hand me my armor

(Hand me my armor, hand me my armor)
(Hand me my armor, hand me my armor)
Hand me my armor, hand me my armor
Hand me my armor, hand me my armor

If I Cant Have You

You tell me that you're leavin'
You say that time will slow the bleedin'
Of this heart that I've placed into your hands
I held it out to you
Now you give it back, what am I supposed to do?
Oh, I had a feeling this day would come and leave me reeling
I just want to run back in your arms again
But they're no longer there
To hold me safe inside, to hold me anywhere

Ooh, if I can't have you
Then I have to find a way to get through
Though I don't want to
I have to do my best to recall
That I'm thankful that I held you at all

I miss you every morning and in the evening rain
Tonight, it's pouring, and I'm alone again
I count the seconds (count the seconds) between the thoughts of you
I'm getting better, baby, I'm almost up to two
Oh, you had your reasons and I know
Some folks are seasons, they got to come and go
But I'm still tender (I'm still tender), I miss the summertime
When I could feel your love and I could still feel mine

Ooh, if I can't have you
Then I have to find a way to get through
Though I don't want to
I have to do my best to recall
That I'm thankful that I held you

You gave me everything that I will need to walk this long road
(Show me the way to get back)
Gave me a sense of pride that I will carry with me
All the way back home

Ooh, if I can't have you
Then I have to find a way to get through
Though I don't want to
I have to do my best to recall
That I'm thankful that I held you at all

I'm thankful that I held you
(I'm thankful that I held you)
I'm thankful that I held you
I'm thankful that I held you, held you, held you
(I'm thankful that I held you)
I'm, I'm, I'm (thankful that I held you)
(I'm thankful that I held you) yeah
(I'm thankful that I held you)

Eyes on You

Tendi with the good hands, stutters when she's speaking
Johnny drives a big rig, Johnny's not sleeping
Sweet Geraldine turned 80 in the spring
But her nerves won't quit, she worries about everything

Sarah's on a work trip, crying at her hotel
Jessie's doing back flips, Molly's doing so well
Joey's got a new girl, Emily moved away
And the world's on fire the whole time we're trying to put out the flame

Life, it gets louder now
Can't stop it
Won't slow down
Lost in this
All I can do
Is keep my eyes on you

I know the world turns around
I know the lights are gonna go out
But until they do
I've got nothing to lose
I keep my eyes on you, I
I keep my eyes on you

Tommy took a free fall, didn't pull the ripcord
Gathered at the funeral, everybody looked bored
Amanda had a baby, Katie she lost a few
And when the smoke gets thick, I can't help it, but hear tick-tick boom

Life, it gets louder now
Can't stop it
Won't slow down
Lost in this
All I can do
Is keep my eyes on you

I know the world turns around
I know the lights are gonna go out
But until they do
I've got nothing to lose
I keep my eyes on you

(I keep my eyes on the horizon)
(I keep my eyes on the horizon)
(I keep my eyes on the horizon)
I
(I keep my eyes on the horizon)
(I keep my eyes on the horizon)
(I keep my eyes on the horizon)

I know the world turns around
I know the lights are gonna go out
But until they do
I've got nothing to lose
I've got nothing to lose
I keep my eyes on you
I keep my eyes on you
I keep my eyes on you
I keep my eyes on you

Miss Simone

Smiles in the morning at me
Apartment on the second story
Strangers in a brand new city
Both remembering last night
Kitchen table and a bottle of wine
The only thing on my mind is you

The way the moonlight flickered in
We were stars of some old classic film with

Miss Simone singing
Pour some sugar in my bowl, baby
In the glow of the candlelight
We danced all night
On the rooftop thinking
No one needs to know a thing
But Miss Simone
No one but Miss Simone

Moving boxes cover the floor
Never quite been here before
Finally made a house feel like home
The years are flying past us now
But you and I have figured out how
To conjure up a feeling so true

Close the door and set the day down
Settle in and we'll throw on some

Miss Simone singing
Pour some sugar in my bowl, baby
In the glow of the candlelight
We can dance all night
On the rooftop thinking
No one needs to know a thing
But Miss Simone
No one but Miss Simone

How she'd know
What a heart sounds like
In the glow of this candle
On a rooftop in the moonlight

Someday when we're old and grey
And sifting through our yesterdays
We'll pull that favorite memory from its sleeve
And play that song of you and me and

Miss Simone singing
Pour some sugar in my bowl, baby
In the glow of the candlelight
We will dance all night
On the rooftop thinking
No one needs to know a thing
But Miss Simone
No one but Miss Simone

Wicked Love

Pour my glass of wine
You aught me some fireflies
Told me their names
And how much they love their life in a jar
You twist around me like vines
You rub the stars in my bright eyes
Then you sold me a future
From the ones you had in the trunk of your car

You said I think too much
You said I always mess it up
It was so easy to believe
I've always said the same things

Stay out, honey, I can see you're wicked
And I don't want your wicked love
Don't need what makes me feel addicted
I don't want your wicked love

Stay out, stay out
I don't want your wicked love
Stay out, stay out
I don't want your wicked, wicked
Wicked love

You thought I didn't notice
You had me caught like a firefly
I'd abandoned my flight
To be crawling around with these wings
But I won't forget this moment (wait until you see)
And how mighty the truth can be
How her hammer and nails
Chisel beauty from grotesque things

You say I think too much
Tell me I always mess it up
Well, break the glass and see
If the fireflies agree

Stay out, honey, I can see you're wicked
And I don't want your wicked love
Don't need what makes me feel addicted
I don't want your wicked love

Stay out, stay out
I don't want your wicked love
Stay out, stay out
I don't want your wicked love
I don't want your wicked love
Don't need what makes me feel addicted
I don't want your wicked, wicked
Wicked love

Wait until you see
How mighty the truth can be
Like an ocean of light
It's a sky filled with fireflies

Orpheus

Come by the fire, lay down your head
My love, I see you're growing tired
So set the bad day by the bed, and rest a while
Your eyes can close
You don't have to do a thing but listen to me sing
I know you miss the world, the one you knew
The one where everything made sense
Because you didn't know the truth, that's how it works
'Til the bottom drops out and you learn
We're all just hunters seeking solid ground

Don't stop trying to find me here amidst the chaos
Though I know it's blinding, there's a way out
Say out loud
We will not give up on love now
No fear, don't you turn like Orpheus, just stay here
Hold me in the dark, and when the day appears
We'll say
We did not give up on love today

I'll show you good, restore your faith
I'll try and somehow make a meaning of the poison in this place
Convince you love, don't breathe it in
You were written in the stars that we are swimming in
And it has no name, no guarantee
It's just the promise of a day I know that some may never see
But that's enough, if the bottom drops out
I hope my love was someone else's solid ground

Don't stop trying to find me here amidst the chaos
Though I know it's blinding, there's a way out
Say out loud
We will not give up on love now
No fear, don't you turn like Orpheus, just stay here
Hold me in the dark, and when the day appears
We'll say
We did not give up on love today
We'll say
We did not give up on love today

Poetry by Dead Men

Ooh
By the time you hear this, I'll be in the rearview mirror
I'll even wear that green dress you like, so when I disappear
You can turn around, one last look at the girl you lost
In the time you took to make up your mind
Between the two roads
Go and take some more time
But me and mine must go

I tried to wait it out, no more
Can't find the man I was waiting for

I wanted to be your girl in a white T-shirt
Over coffee, stirring in the cinnamon
While you read me poetry by dead men
I wanted to be your girl with your hands on my skin
Stirring in the cinnamon
While you read me poetry by dead men
(While you read me poetry by dead men)
While you read me poetry by dead men

By the time you hear this, who knows where I might be
Singin' 'bout another near-miss love that ended incomplete
I was ready, but you weren't
So jump with your net from this bridge you've burned
I wanted to tell you things, all the secrets I've been keepin'
I saw it in front of me, but then you just kept disappearin'

A good dream, almost
Now I tell your ghost

I wanted to be your girl in a white T-shirt
Over coffee, stirrin' in the cinnamon
While you read me poetry by dead men
I wanted to be your girl with your hands on my skin
Stirrin' in the cinnamon
While you read me poetry by dead men
(While you read me poetry by dead men)
While you read me poetry by dead men

Line after line, the words just left to remind
The two of us, oh, what we could have been
Poetry by dead men
Fire from embers, how can I make you remember?
With a turn of a phrase, would you turn to me if I say
I still want to be your girl?

I still wanna be your girl in a white T-shirt
Over coffee, stirrin' in the cinnamon
While you read me poetry by dead men
I wanted to be your girl with your hands on my skin
Stirrin' in the cinnamon
While you read me poetry by dead men
(While you read me poetry by dead men)
While you read me poetry by dead men

Someone Who Loves Me

Could I rest here for a while
Near that medal 'round your neck
St. Jude's wearing a smile
He wouldn't mind I bet
I can't go face the world
My bones won't hold me up
So tell the saint of lost souls where to find me
Softly sleepin' here in the deep end of someone who loves me

You'll let me cry it out
'Cause you know that sometimes I can't stop
And still I'm seeking how
To stand up when the bottom drops
The weight of all the world
Can blind me to its beauty
But every time I need to be reminded
I know you will, and say you're still someone who loves me

I try to push it down
But it comes back faster and harder
Tides are changing on a dime
And I'm just trying to keep my head above the water

Surrender's just a word
'Til you try it out
And see how hard it is to hurt
With someone else around
I'm the worst I've ever been
Afraid of almost everything
The skies are clear but storms are always comin'
Your gift to me
Is just to be
Bracing for the winds I always summon
My home, my heart
Thank God you are
Someone who loves me

Saint Honesty

We're leaving all the windows open
We don't even mind the rain
Or where we let the floors get wet
So what if the hardwood stains?
'Cause we're collecting evidence
Of one remarkable storm
How wild it was to find it, finally feel the climate
Instead of only staying dry and warm

Rain on us, Saint Honesty
Salvation is coming in the morning, but now what we need
Is a little rain on our face from you, sweet Saint Honesty

So we won't sleep tonight
While we brace against the wind
Oh, these hearts, they're weather-makers
We'll go where they take us
Until we find ourselves shelter again
We won't settle for the silence
We won't drown in the tears
We'll say every single word even if we think they'll hurt
Let the rain wash away these tears

Rain on us, Saint Honesty
Salvation is coming in the morning, and now what we need
Is a little rain on our face from you, sweet Saint Honesty

Oh, we won't let go, we'll be soaked to the bone
Baptized by truth, we will reap what we sow
Build our own higher ground when the rain's coming down
This is worth it to me, Saint Honesty

Rain
Salvation is coming in the morning
Wait patiently, aiming straight for it
But now what we need
Is a little rain on our face from you, sweet Saint Honesty

A Safe Place to Land

When holding your breath is safer than breathing
When letting go is braver than keeping
When innocent words turn to lies
And you can't hide by closing your eyes

When pain is all that they offer
Like a kiss from the lips of monster
You know the famine so well, but never met the feast
And home is the belly of the beast

The ocean is wild and over your head
And the boat beneath you is sinking
Don't need room for your bags
Hope is all that you have
So say the Lord's prayer twice, hold your babies tight
Surely someone will reach out a hand
And show you a safe place to land

Oh, imagine yourself in a building
Up in flames being told to stand still
The window's wide open
This is leap is on faith
You don't know who will catch you
Maybe somebody will

The ocean is wild and over your head
And the boat beneath you is sinking
Don't need room for your bags
Hope is all that you have
So say the Lord's prayer twice, hold your babies tight
Surely someone will reach out a hand
And show you a safe place to land

Be the hand of a hopeful stranger
A little scared but you're strong enough
Be the light in the dark of this danger
'Til the sun comes up

Be the hand of a hopeful stranger
A little scared but you're strong enough
Oh, be the light in the dark of this danger
'Til the sun comes up

Be the hand of a hopeful stranger
A little scared but you're strong enough
Be the light in the dark of this danger
'Til the sun comes up

'Til the sun comes up, oh
'Til the sun comes up, 'til the sun
'Til the sun comes up
'Til the sun, 'til the sun
Comes up
